Math Advancement Review Site
Welcome to MARS!
MARS, short for Math Advancement Review Site, is my creation for my DAAPS Capstone project. My goal is for MARS to assist AVID students who are confused with their math homework and need another resource to use. MARS is intended to serve as a supplemental resource to teacher instruction and help bridge the gap between at-home work and in-class learning. Empowering students in their own learning will hopefully help ease AVID freshmen into high school math and give them the tools they need to succeed on their own.
Inspiration
I was first introduced to AVID after serving as a mentor/tutor during my junior year, and I returned my senior year to mentor again. My junior year, 2020-2021, was the year of virtual learning where most of the year was held on online Google Meet school. In my AVID group, many students were struggling with math and were not able to contact their teacher easily to receive help. Unfortunately, they were sophomores in Geometry and I did not remember all the theorems and specifics of the class. Soon, my idea for MARS was born. I wanted to create a website to provide free math help to AVID students so that they could receive specific help with the lesson they were struggling with. My original goal for MARS was to serve as a supplemental resource to bridge the gap between in-school instruction and at-home learning for students in math.
About Me
Hi! My name is Alexa Fahrer and I am a senior in the Shadow Mountain High School Class of 2022. At Shadow, I participate in the DAAPS program, Key Club, Society of Spanish Scholars, Society of Women Scholars, National Honor Society, Link Crew, Student Principal Advisory Committee, and Varsity Tennis. In my free time, I love to listen to Christmas music at any time of the year, read, drink Arnold Palmers and sparkling water, obsess over fantasy football, and watch James Bond movies! In the fall, I am heading off to Duke University to study mathematics, computer science, public policy, or education. I would like to thank Mr. Kevin Storey and Ms. Casey Boerner for encouraging and supporting me through this journey; MARS would not be possible without them. I would also like to thank my DAAPS classmates-- especially Sydney, Jason, Jill, Boston, Mason, and Boaz-- for providing me with endless support (and jokes) to keep me motivated.
